Helpful Guidelines for SHRM Student Chapters (members & advisors)

August:

  • The College Relations Chair will contact each student chapter advisor for the names and contact information of new student chapter presidents.  Each student president and chapter advisor receives meeting notices via e-mail to attend LHRMA monthly meetings. 
  • Develop and provide a recruiting plan for the current school year to the College Relations Chair.  Each chapter submitting a plan will receive giveaways (up to $25) to use during recruitment activities.

September:

  • September is a good month to hold your first SHRM meeting of the school year.  Remember, College Relations committee member(s) are available to attend a student chapter meeting (at the request of the student chapter).
  • SHRM State Conference is held during this month; student chapter members are eligible to attend and/or volunteer at the event at a discounted price.
  • Develop and provide chapter goals for the current school year to the College Relations Chair.  Each chapter submitting goals will be eligible to receive $250 from the LHRMA Board.
  • Chapter Advisors should complete and return the required Chapter Information Form to SHRM no later than September 30th.

October:

  • When planning your chapter programs, remember that LHRMA members are great resources to utilize as meeting speakers.
  • SHRM scholarship application deadline date is typically in October. Watch the SHRM website for exact dates.

November:

  • To be considered an active chapter by SHRM, the chapter should have no less than eight (8) active student members who are also members of SHRM.  Eight active members should be in place by November 30th.

January:

  • Send updated resumes of every interested student chapter member to the College Relations Chair.  Resumes may be sent at any time throughout the year and are available to the LHRMA membership electronically.

February:

  • Student Chapter Recognition month!  All student chapter presidents, advisors and other chapter members should attend this LHRMA meeting to present their chapter’s goals, accomplishments and plans for the upcoming semester.

March:

  • HR Games are typically held this month (location and date varies annually).
  • Merit Award applications must be postmarked to SHRM no later than March 31st.
  • Submit applications for local scholarships no later than March 31st (see below for scholarship details).
  • Student Chapter Advisor of the Year nominations are due (see SHRM’s website for required form and nomination procedures).

April:

  • Elect officers for the next school year.

May:

  • Recognize outgoing seniors and senior officers.
  • Chapter officers for the next school year and advisors are encouraged to meet at the end of the school year or during the summer to establish chapter goals and objectives for the next school year including program activities.

June:

  • Student SHRM conference is held (check SHRM for location and specific dates).

Important Notes

  • Each chapter president and one other student member may attend any LHRMA meeting free of charge; each chapter president and one other student member may attend a LHRMA workshop at a discounted price ($15).
  • Remember, LHRMA professional members are a great resource to find speakers for your chapter’s program functions.
  • Each chapter should submit a newsletter article to LHRMA for publication at least once per semester.  Articles should be submitted by the 10th of each month to the College Relations Chair or LHRMA Secretary.

Scholarship applications must be received by LHRMA no later than March 31st.

  • UNL – Richard Bourne Scholarship, $500
    Obtain applications from the Chapter Advisor or your career services office
  • NWU – Dr. LaVerne C. Rudell Scholarship, $500
    Obtain applications from the Chapter Advisor or online at lincolnhr.org
  • Doane – M. David Osterhout Human Relations Scholarship, $500
    Obtain applications from the Chapter Advisor or online at lincolnhr.org
