February's Luncheon Program
Prevention specialists Rose Hood-Buss and Scott Stemper spoke with professionals at the Lincoln Human Resource Management Association Feb. 14. The speakers discussed suicide prevention methods defined by the QPR Institute. QPR stands for Question, Persuade and Refer. Question a person about suicide. Persuade someone to get help. Refer someone to the appropriate resource like Bryan Health West hospital or the crisis line (800) 273-8255.
Nebraska is ranked in the top 10 for teen suicides, Stemper said. It’s No. 2 cause of fatalities for people ages 15-34.
"These tragedies are completely preventable,” Stemper said. “The first part is asking a question, ‘are you suicidal?’ It opens conversation and lowers anxiety. Statistics prove it.”
Hood-Buss said she’s talked to people who went through QPR training and saved lives. Region V Systems have trained more than 3,000 people in QPR.
